According to Grannie Annie's records, before Cali came into rescue in the year 2000, she and companion sheepdog Barclay, lived in a pen with a goat, some chickens and a pig.  The dogs lived in deplorable conditions and were sorely neglected. Thanks to a caring neighbor, the local animal control officer was notified and Cali and Barkley went off to safe haven with NEOESR. Cali, at 34 pounds, was an emaciated waif of a dog, terrified by loud noises, and wary of new environments.

My husband Ron and I had gone through the winter without a sheepdog,  following Myra's trip to the Rainbow Bridge (see Myra's rescue square),  and we decided it was time for another sheepdog. When we went back to  NEOESR, Grannie Annie matched us up with Cali.  We had recently returned from a trip to Scotland to visit our daughter who was on a study year  abroad. While we were there, we went to a "ceilidh" (essentially a Scottish square dance) which is pronounced the same as Cali, so we changed the spelling of her name to the Gaelic, and Cali became Ceilidh.

I don't think Ceilidh had ever been in a house before her rescue. She made frenetic romps around the room using the furniture as trampolines, and was astonished to find another sheepdog reflected in the sliding glass door. Noises made by electric can openers, hair dryers, coffee grinders, etc. sent her scurrying from the room. But, eventually she learned to adapt, and she has responded to love and affection. She has become a typical Velcro sheepdog who is a beloved part of our family.  She has retained her vibrant personality and she keeps us laughing.

Again, thanks to Grannie Annie and NEOESR for a wonderful match. Barclay was also placed in a successful rescue home. And thanks to the faithful neighbor who cared enough to look out for the lives of two helpless sheepdogs.

Ceilidh, (then Cali) on adoption day on Grannie Annie's famous white couch.
